Wrangler Unlimited

The Jeep name most likely derives from GPV, or “General Purpose Vehicle” in Military parlance, “a hybrid car/truck that weighed no more then 1275lbs, could tow it’s own weight, power the front axle and more”. The specifications belie the fact that the prototypes had to be completed in 49 days.

In military terms, the this was the new age mule, with the Willys name associated strongest to the design, even though Bantam Company was the most influential in the actual process. History is sometimes unkind to the smaller company.

I’ve loved Jeeps, given that my dad adored Jeeps.

But in practical terms, the Jeep is a non stater on many levels.
- rear seats are a joke
- carrying space is a joke
- price is a joke relative to what you get

Enter the Wrangler Unlimited.

This is the first 4 door version of a Jeep, and that may just be the biggest affront to fans ever. Though it makes the vehicle, which is over 20 inches longer, a better fit for most. Even if that just means that you can carry more gear.

The longer wheelbase will correct some of the more awkward ride and steer issues, without an excessive reduction to the off road capability.

The only thing that confuses me is that unlike the Liberty, the Wrangler Unlimited is not going to be available with a diesel engine in North America. Why pray tell ?
